Malaguti Returns with the RST 125

At this year’s ECIMA moto show in Milan Italy Malaguti came back with a new line up of bikes, and a scooter. Of interest to the Campers would be their new RST 125 4T sport bike. If this look familiar to you there’s a good reason—this is the Derbi GPR 125 4T that has shown up as an Aprilia GPR 125, Race GSR 125, and now as a Malaguti RST 125.

Malaguti since 1930
Founded in San Lazzaro di Savena, and later hailing from Bologna, Italy Malaguti was a family run business producing small bikes, scooters, and mopeds. They had a long history lasting over 80 years. In 2011 they were forced to lay off their staff closing the doors. The Austrian KSR Group, owner of the Lambretta and Brixton brands, has picked up the Malaguti holdings, and worked out an arraignment with Piaggio to produce several variations of bikes based on the Piaggio/Zongshen 125cc four stroke engine.

The RST features a twin spar aluminum frame, asymmetric swing arm, Paioli inverted forks, J.Juan brakes, radial front caliper, 300mm front disc, braided brake lines, 17" wheels, and a sporty styling à la Derbi. The water cooled dual over head cam four valve four stroke single engine produces a limited 14.75 HP at 10,750—this is the maximum power output allowed for riders with an A1 license. The bike weighs in at roughly 140kg, and is expected to sell for close to 3,000€.

Derbi worked magic creating this bike, and while it no longer carries the moniker it is nice to see the bike still being produced.

The bikes are restricted so that they can be sold to A1 licensed riders.

The engine has its roots at Derbi. You can tell from just looking at it. Piaggio worked out a deal with Zongshen who makes the engine. The various incarnations of this bike have been built in both Europe and China. Where Malaguti has it built would be a guess at this point.
