The Piaggio Group and Aprilia affectionately and respectfully remember Ivano Beggio, founder of Aprilia, who has passed away at 73

The founder of Aprilia, Ivano Beggio, has passed away. Born in 1944, his passion for two wheels began in his father's Aprilia handmade bicycle factory, innovating and diversifying production with the introduction of motorcycles and scooters.

In 1975, Beggio established a small team for the production of racing motorcycles which, thanks to technical-productive innovation, soon made a name for itself, so much that it won the Italian motocross championship in the 125 and 250 cc classes in 1977. From 1980, Aprilia began to mass produce small engine motorcycles (50 and 125 cc), then launching highly successful, aesthetically and technologically innovative models on the market for urban mobility.

With 294 Grand Prix races won between 1987 and the present, Aprilia holds the record for the most wins of any European manufacturer in the history of GP motorcycle competition. These race wins are joined by no less than 54 world titles: 38 in the World Motorcycle Championship (20 in the 125 class and 18 in the 250 class), 7 in Superbike (double Rider/Manufacturer title in 2010, 2012 and 2014, as well as Manufacturer in 2013) and 9 in the Off Road disciplines (7 in Supermoto and 2 in Trial). The Aprilia trophy case also includes the 2005 Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, won with the RSV4 RF ridden by Lorenzo Savadori, who is currently riding an Aprilia in World Superbike alongside Eugene Laverty.

Beggio is also remembered by world champion Max Biaggi, who began his brilliant career with Ivano Beggio and Aprilia in 1992: “Ivano Beggio was part of my life as an athlete - a sort of father in racing to me. He gave me his trust and a competitive bike when, after winning the European championship, also on Aprilia, I was little more than a boy. His was a brave choice, but also intelligent. And these are the two aspects that I remember most clearly about Ivano Beggio - knowing how to place a lot of passion at the service of his skills in order to always find the strength and energy for an extra step. This was also instrumental in achieving my many wins with Aprilia.”

The world of motorcycling is in mourning and in particular the Aprilia family. Ivano Beggio, its founder, the man who took his dream to the top of the Olympus of two wheels, died last night at 73 years of age.

Beggio was, for Roberto Colaninno, CEO and General Manager of the Piaggio Group (of which the brand has been part since 2004), "a visionary ahead of his time" who created, practically from scratch, "one of the most brilliant stories in the Italian motorcycle industry."

Ivano Beggio, who was born in 1944, was a true passionate about the two wheels and started at the Aprilia bicycle factory, handmade by his father, to innovate and diversify with the subsequent production of motorcycles and scooters. In 1975, he decided to bet on a small team for the production of racing bikes and thanks to technical-productive innovation, in 1977, he won the Italian motocross championship in the 125cc and 250cc classes.

Since 1980, Aprilia has started producing small displacement bikes (50cc and 125cc) in series and launched successful models, with an aesthetic and technologically innovative market. With him was born in 1991 the Scarabeo, the first high-wheel scooter in the European market and in 1992 he took a new innovative step with the first scooter and two-stroke motorcycle with catalytic silencer. The last great evolutionary jump took place in 1998 when entering the big door in the sector of large displacement bikes with the RSV Mille.

Successes in the circuits

He made his debut in the 1985 World Championship of Motorcycling in the 250cc category and since then he has won world-class riders such as Max Biaggi, Marco Simoncelli, Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner, Alvaro Bautista, Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri, Manuel Poggiali and Alessandro Gramigni.

For Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing's sporting director of competition: "You have to think about the champions Aprilia has achieved throughout his career and the victories he has accumulated to understand the importance of the Ivano Beggio project. Japanese on the track, facing the biggest manufacturers in the world starting from scratch and in the end winning, means uniting mind and soul."

World champion Max Biaggi has also had words in memory of Ivano Beggio, as he began his brilliant sports career with his hand and Aprilia in 1992: "Ivano Beggio was part of my life as a driver, a kind of father in racing for me. He gave me his confidence and a competitive bike when, after winning the European Championship, also with Aprilia, he was little more than a child." For Biaggi, "it was a brave choice, but also an intelligent one", the two aspects that he most clearly remembers about Ivano Beggio, "he knew how to put a lot of passion at the service of his abilities to always find the strength and energy to go one step further," he said.
