Mattel’s GoPro Hot Wheel

In June of 2018 as part of the Hot Wheels 50th aniversery Mattel introduced an incredible car that seems to have gone completely unnoticed. Ostensively this is a toy for young kids, however it is really a uniquely creative tool for media creation.

Originally these sold for $1.09, however they are now considered collector’s items, and the price has been greatly inflated. I ordered this one from Amazon. It was shipped in a thin plastic bag with no packing materials. Unsurprisingly the cardboard was damaged—there goes the collectability. :scream_cat:

Mattel named this Hot Wheel the Zoom In™ from El Segundo. It is designed to take a GoPro Session camera along as a passenger allowing for the videoing of first person Hot Wheel excitement. Bring on the budding motorcar cinematographers—no longer do you have to imagine what it would look like going down the track.

The Zoom In is constructed of a die cast chassis with a plastic upper. In 2018 it was available in a GoPro blue under carriage, with either a black, or white body. There is a flexible gray arm that acts as a spring to secure the camera. For 2019 Mattel introduced the Zoom In™ as a red and white, or a green and blue livery.

The Zoom In™ is very symmetrical allowing for rear facing camera shots. Send it down the track forward, and a second time backwards to obtain both views, then edit them together creating even more excitement. Outside of the video camera toting feature the Zoom In™ is basically a typical Hot Wheel ready for full speed loops, corkscrews, jumps, and other gonzo action.
