Sunday July 3rd, 2016

Independence is our annual ride celebrating our day of freedom. As is the tradition this ride flows through the hills of the San Francisco East Bay.

Meet up is at Sparky's Giant Burgers (4120 Redwood Rd, Oakland CA). There is a parking lot with plenty of room for your transporters. Meet up Sunday July 3rd at 10:00am, KSU 10:30am.

A Chevron station is adjacent to Sparky's where we can gas up. Lunch will take place after the ride at Sparky's.

Prep the bikes, get the chains lubed up, the registrations current, the tires checked, and that riding gear ready. Smaller (50~85cc) two stroke replicas like the Derbi GPR, and the Aprilia RS50 are very much encouraged. Fast mopeds should be fine (make sure your brakes work!). Full size 4T (250cc+) is frowned upon. Groms and such are okay!

If you don’t have a Replica Racer contact us, and lets find one for you. If you haven’t gotten your Replica Racer ready lets get on that, we can help you!

With all the changes Jason did to his bike it's no longer anything close to stock/Thai, or Japanese. ;) I wonder if there's even a single stock bolt on the bike. What was interesting today is that I noticed that he's got Over Racing parts--I didn't know the brand until I started doing the RS4 Bling thread.

You do realize Wolf that you are just down in SD--not all that far from SF. We do these rides about once a month, and you did just miss out on our GPR Camp action. It wouldn't be much effort to come up here to ride. ;) Then you wouldn't have to be jealous anymore. :P

Plus, now that Chris has a bike in SD I'll probably be heading down south for some riding. But near as I've been able to make out there really isn't much in the way of fun roads in SD. Lots of them in the Santa Monica Mtns though...

We ended up going to Marin again because Speedy couldn't make it, and I don't know the east bay roads well enough to lead a ride out there. Worked out okay. :)

More photos are rolling in too. And hopefully I'll have some decent video. :)

Looking @ p/u truck tents to sleep for a day @ the track and GPR camp.

You guys have me looking @ yz85 engines kitted to 110cc and dropping that into this chassis. Palomar mountain is nice canyon carving and 20 minutes from me but it's getting too hot to dress appropriately for fun road riding and MX. It's surfing weather.

That Derbi SuperMotard looks like a BLAST—Was that the 'roller' that was on CL for awhile, or something else ?

I keep looking for the roller to pop up again, but it hasn't so I'm wondering if I should give up ?
RJ—The roller is gone. My friend Tyler who runs MopedGP bought it. He of course saw it on my Replica Racers postings. ;)

Wolf—I'm not a fan of putting the dirt bike engines in these bikes. There are folks that do it and like it, but I'm not one of them. If you aren't having fun with what you can get out of these engines then (in my opinion) you are doing it wrong. That, and most people that do it don't do a proper job of it. When you upgrade the engine to that extent you should be upgrading the chassis, suspension, and very importantly the brakes. I rarely see any of that happen when folks transplant a dirt bike engine.

The other thing is, you really don't need one of those engines in these bikes. Frequently the folks with those engines don't ride as fast as the folks with them. If you need a bigger engine to that extent it's better just to get a different bike--but of course that comes with a whole different bag of conundrums.

Here's a video from the first Derbi de Mayo ride. The slow motard has a CR85 engine in it. The Tetsuya RS is by far the slowest bike on the ride, and yet because the rider was one of the best (I would say the best) he out rides everyone. The slow GPR rider is me.

I remember doing bicycle camping rides to Mt. Palomar when I was in high school. I also did the Tecate-Encinada ride twice. That was pretty stupid. I hear the roads are much better now. ;) I did the 40 mile BXM ride last year. That almost killed me. But it was a good time.

I really want to do some riding in the Santa Monica hills. There are some amazing roads out there. The trick would be finding the right campsite from which to host base camp.

Wolfman$ wrote:Thanks for the vid Tora, that looks like so much fun I can't even describe it! The thing that makes me smile so much is that you guys are the only ones that know they're all 50cc bikes. Everyone else thinks you're a bunch of punk kids on, crotch rockets.
Yeah, the 85 engine seems like a stretch for me but hey, a man can have a dream

The Harada replica misses shifts like me, man I hate that. I'm ordering the rest of the parts today and yes they include suspension upgrades too !!! With some busted knuckles, I'll soon be joining you all .
Rj_666 wrote:@Wolfman$ anxious to hear about your upgrades, especially suspension upgrades. Please start a project thread when you get around to working these !

Wolfman$ wrote:Will do RJ, still accumulating parts so I can pull the trigger and knock this thing out in a day or two. Still need a n2 tank to deal with shock situation. (Well 4 of them really). That way I can start tuning n2 dampeners again. Locating a spring (90kg for a 260mm) shock is tough. I've a solution with the stock spring but I'm stuck with a higher preload.

In all fairness, it needs exactly what my preload limit measures out to be (installed height) so I may give it a shot. It should work out with my heavy ass the RS is sprung ok but with minimal preload and no way to adjust the factory unit, ( I've no ability to make spring seats ) we all need a new rear shock so I went with this one.

Image
Its an rebound / preload adjustable emulsion design but can be fitted with a remote compression adjustable res from works performance to make it perfect for us. I even like the shim stack setup. It keeps the 260mm ride height with correct chain geometry. Going to a longer 280mm is easier because of the spring options but changes the geometry, (trail) too much for my taste as well as problems with dive and unloading/loading, (squat). It was $57 from Merry olde England, before Brexit:bangwall:!

The victim !!!

Wolf what are you intending to employ for a rear shock?

edit: never mind

looks like you posted while I had the page open.
Wolfman$1 wrote:Haha yeah I do that too Tora! Its a fastace/dnm clone from China but nice quality. It looks as if the seller bought a batch from alibaba and was unloading them before Brexit. I'm sure he'll return soon but let me work on this and see if it's a viable option for us. it sure seems promising so far. Heres the remote res.
