2018 Aprilia RS4 50 Euro 4 Upgrade Project: Starters

Post by toratora » Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:39 am

It is possible to have more than one issue, and for them to be unrelated, with the exception that the crash may have caused both of them. Look under the engine, and see if the red wire connecting to the starter is still properly attached.

The starter is held on by two bolts inside the stator cover.

yeah did it and the voltage stayed at 12 . I went to the dealer at lunch and they will replace the starter under warranty, I ordered the relay just in case thanks

Also the red wire below is properly attached with a screw. This is where i wired it directly to the battery and to the mains to test. thanks for the photos :D

The replacement and missing part from tyga showed up..so had to go on.. I also got these nice little Decals

The ass on this thing is starting to take shape!! not too bad between the matt plastic and gloss carbon.

2018 Aprilia RS4 50 Euro 4 Upgrade Project: The Öhlins Contingency

Post by toratora » Wed Oct 17, 2018 11:05 am

We can't get these bikes new here so the concept of a warranty never even entered my mind!

It is looking nice, and yeah an Öhlins will look nice on it—working on that! ;)

Glad to see that things worked out with Tyga. Did you have to send the defective ones back?

Re: 2018 Aprilia RS4 50 Euro 4 Upgrade Project - Shocks

Post by Berkeley » Fri Oct 19, 2018 11:06 am

Hey Tora,

So going a bit of hunting Ive come across your GRP page on the ohlins shocks

Image

Looking at the Yss site for an RS 50 the dimensions seems to be the same.

Yss shock RS 50

My question is .... What is the length that actually fitted? The drawing by you had 280mm on it, the shock you fitted was 295mm and the YSS was 290mm ( Mine is a YSS R16V , but cant find much more info on it)

as here here

Image

On yours you had to cut away the adjuster as was too wide

Image

and also at the bottom it looks like it didnt fit as was too long?? and that the main swing arm of the bike was in the way???

Image

So ive come across this shock which I think will fit. it is 276mm long, so thinking if it is slightly shorter then i wont have problems at the bottom end ??? this is just a hunch of mine?? I know this mainly depends on the bracket length but dont have any dims of it... any thoughts and can you check it out cheers

Looking at my rs4 50 i see that the bracket of the frame is proud and has a lot more clearance then the gpr

Image

and at the top and bottom behind the shock there seems to be a lot of clearence as well for the piggy back

Image

however due to the rear hugger I doubt the piggy back can go on the rear of the shock .. it will have to face fwd.. a bit hidden??? maybe there is a remote piggy back that can be fitted somewhere more visible and and can easily adjust it

2018 Aprilia RS4 50 Euro 4 Upgrade Project: The Öhlins Contingency

What I was able to do on the Benelli famed GPR (DRP) cannot be done on the RS framed GPR (like your bike). But I do have the specs for the shock for the newer bikes (I got that from Aprilia, and is different from the previous bike), and I have been it contact with an Öhlins representative (who has looked over the specs for all of these shocks), who says he can build up a custom shock. I just haven't had the time to write it all up in and email for him. But it is in the works, and it will happen. I was working with him on this earlier this year as I was hoping to get it all set for the bike in Japan. Unfortunately we ran out of time.

The shock on the DRP was actually too long. Recently I had it modified to lose a centimeter. This brought it to the proper length. It still needs a proper spring for my weight. But we were having trouble sourcing one. The forks also need to be resprung to my weight.

I had to do a lot of mods to the shock, swingarm, and frame to get things to work on the DRP. It wasn't at all straight forward, and I don't recommend it, because it will be possible to get a proper shock for those bikes now too.

I learned on the DRP that getting the correct length is important. When I had the shock modified to the proper length things worked better. Part of this was having the ability to adjust the spring (previously the length didn't allow for that). But also it put the geometry of the bike back to where it should be, rather than too high in the back.

On the newer bikes a piggy back res isn't going to work. It will have to be remote. Figuring out the placement, and length of the line is something for which you could probably help out with as my bike is in Japan. :P

It is possible that the shock that works on this bike will work on an older RS50, but I don't know if they are compatible, and I suspect that they are not, because the swing arm and subframe change significantly.

Thanks for all those photos! I find them very helpful.

Cool thanks for the info.
So ur saying that a 285mm works for yours now.. Do you know what the length of mine should be?? 280 or 290mm?
The ktm is 276mm so if it's the 280 then it should work.
Why wouldn't the piggy backs work fixed?and why only remotely?
If custom is the only way to go then so be it and will await your reply.

On another note I'm thinking of going for stage 6 all the way through for the power upgrade. I've read all of your previous posts and replys on it. Any thoughts on the 95cc version? Seems to a lot more cost effective than the 100 2fast kit?? Re pwk carb I don't think it has the racing float bowl on it to change the jets out easily so may switch or go with it thanks...

2018 Aprilia RS4 50 Euro 4 Upgrade Project: Stage6

If this bike was for you my response would be different, but because this bike is ostensibly for your daughter I wouldn't suggest any of the BigRacing kits. Yes I have three of them, but I've also been riding bikes for decades. ;)

If you look at my BigRacing threads, and study the dyno charts you'll see these are aggressive kits. That means hard to ride. The BR77 doesn't have any power until about 10K rpm. It's totally intoxicating when it gets on the pipe producing twenty some odd horse power, but it's also a challenging to ride. Without some skill most people would be slower on these kits. The BR88 is a little more tame, but only a little.

The 2Fast kits are also high strung—which they should be because their market is racing. :o

Most (read all that I've ever seen) of the PWKs come with the easy access port for the main jet. The CP has a bowl available with the feature, and I've upgraded my CPs with this bowl. It would be nice if they were available in that configuration.

I don't think there's room for a piggyback on these bikes for a number of reasons. Mostly because the piggy backs tend to be very close to one of the mounting points. So a remote just seems like a better solution. I'm not sure on the exact numbers on the shocks. I would have to look them up. 8-)

Awesome.. thanks for your input on this... and yes the bike is for her.. the plan is to do this one up then get myself another 848/1199 Ducati...or wait a bit for the 2019 rsv4 Aprilia. The idea of putting more power in is so she could ride at a decent speed with me.

As for the piggy back maybe it will fit just facing fwd like the ktm, there seems to be room.. just saying.
Will study your posts on the bbk's
