What I was able to do on the Benelli famed GPR (DRP) cannot be done on the RS framed GPR (like your bike). But I do have the specs for the shock for the newer bikes (I got that from Aprilia, and is different from the previous bike), and I have been it contact with an Öhlins representative (who has looked over the specs for all of these shocks), who says he can build up a custom shock. I just haven't had the time to write it all up in and email for him. But it is in the works, and it will happen. I was working with him on this earlier this year as I was hoping to get it all set for the bike in Japan. Unfortunately we ran out of time.
The shock on the DRP was actually too long. Recently I had it modified to lose a centimeter. This brought it to the proper length. It still needs a proper spring for my weight. But we were having trouble sourcing one. The forks also need to be resprung to my weight.
I had to do a lot of mods to the shock, swingarm, and frame to get things to work on the DRP. It wasn't at all straight forward, and I don't recommend it, because it will be possible to get a proper shock for those bikes now too.
I learned on the DRP that getting the correct length is important. When I had the shock modified to the proper length things worked better. Part of this was having the ability to adjust the spring (previously the length didn't allow for that). But also it put the geometry of the bike back to where it should be, rather than too high in the back.
On the newer bikes a piggy back res isn't going to work. It will have to be remote. Figuring out the placement, and length of the line is something for which you could probably help out with as my bike is in Japan.
It is possible that the shock that works on this bike will work on an older RS50, but I don't know if they are compatible, and I suspect that they are not, because the swing arm and subframe change significantly.
Thanks for all those photos! I find them very helpful.
