DRP: MyChron 3

Post by toratora » Fri Apr 14, 2017 11:39 pm

Had a chance to take a quick look at one of the Mycron units tonight. These use to belong to Chris over on the two stroke foro. He hooked me up with these some time ago now, but I've just been too busy to look at them. This is basically a nice little data recorder for karts, but can also be em

There's some decent online docs for this unit. I found the wire pinouts—which will be great for making sensor cables, and the manual for the Plus/Gold units—both in English. The Plus can track two temperature sensors, a speed sensor, an RPM sensor, and a beacon for track times. The beacon works off of an infrared system.

I'll be using this on a street bike though so I'll only be interested in the temps, RPM, and speed sensors. I haven't yet decided if I want to track head temp (CHT), or H2O temp. I will want to track EGT though.

There are two warning LEDs per temp sensor—too cold, and too hot. If the engine isn't up to running temp (user selectable) then a red light will be lit, and if it goes past the (user selectable) upper limit a second light will turn on. Since both sensors have this there are four LEDs for this function.

Another interesting feature of this unit that it can calculate what gear the bike is in based on RPM/speed. There is also a multistage shift light with five zones to let you know when it is time to shift. These levels are user selectable. There is also a computer interface that allows the date to be uploaded into a computer for analysis.

A little more work today! Got to some polishing, and cleaning. I think I'm going to paint the top end, and I need a bearing for the wrist pin, so I can't quite put it together yet.

DRP: Derbi Testa Rossa

Post by toratora » Sat Apr 22, 2017 8:39 pm

I decided to go for some paint action. I really don't have the proper facilities to do paint. So even attempting it is kind of stupid. But hey...lolz.

It took quite a bit of effort to get things ready to go. I had some trouble with the painters tape. It's probably too old. It didn't want to stick very well.

Starting in with the primer. Bill said to get VHT, but they only had Dupli at the parts store, so I begrudgingly went with it.

Then with the color coat. I had a lot of trouble with the white spitting out huge balls of paint. It also went to a bit of an off white color, rather than the bright white that I had wanted. This could be an interaction with the primer.

For the head I wanted the old testa rossa—something bring and ostentatious. What I got was more of a blood red. Oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Then the clear coat. The clear yellowed a bit in some spots. It's hard to tell how much you've spayed. It can run pretty easy if your are not careful enough—I had some runs. ;P

DRP: Expectations

Well I've had them before. :) My current expectation is to have this ready for GPR Camp. I've a few things on the way for it. I ordered one of those Motoforce dial indicator adaptors, and I got a Harbor Freight digital dial indicator. I really intend to figure this stuff out this time. Chatting with Ed has me really thinking about getting a new Micron. It might actually be less money than getting all the sensors for the Micron 3's that I picked up. Have to do some more research. Ed went with the new 5.

Oh I see I didn't put any photos of the completed engine paint. This one isn't all the way done, but getting closer. These photos are actually of the same engine about four years apart. :D

People like Ed are really dangerous to know! lolz

DRP: Get your head on straight dude!

Post by toratora » Tue May 02, 2017 8:39 pm

Reading the docs for the Stage6 kit has be a bit concerned. They actually tell you to put the head on backwards! All of the other top ends for the Derbi, including the stock ones, fix the head so that the water inlet is towards the intake. The Stage6 docs and photo show the water inlet at the exhaust end.

I check with some videos, and all of the ones I've found have the head installed in the standard position.

The Bolt Depot order came in. They even sent me this extra special bolt. Check it out!

Still waiting on the case bolts though...the Depot didn't have what I needed.

Just wondering why you are going with Stainless and not Titanium ?
Nothing wrong with Stainless, I have 2 other bikes that are fully loaded with Stainless ARP fasteners and Stainless everywhere else.
With the availability of all the cheap Chinese Ti on eBay, why not go that route ?
I can provide a Seller I have been getting loads of stuff from for the past few years ...
Who's to say that I haven't ordered some Ti? ;)

It's actually already posted. ;)

I didn't go with that one though because from the images they didn't look quite as nice as the ones from this company. These bolts haven't shown up yet so I can't actually speak to their quality just yet.

That said the stainless bolts from the Bolt Depot are generally of great quality, and the pricing is a tiny fraction compared to ProBolt who charges more for stainless than it costs to get titanium. Although if you want black stainless, or titanium bolts ProBolt offers both. You just have to pay their high prices.

I ordered some Ti bolts to employ on the engine cases. Stupid place to go for exotic bolts, but I didn't need that many bolts, and they wouldn't be all that critical, thus I figured it would be a nice place to test them. The Bolt Depot didn't have the stainless bolts I wanted for the engine cases so I started hunting around. I looked up Xero's bolt posting from RJ's thread. That's how I found China Ti listings. Then I ordered some case bolts. Hopefully, they'll arrive this week, and I can move forward with the engine. If they are nice enough I'll probably get more for this bike.

Banzai did a whole bunch of Ti action on his 125 version of this bike. He also spun up his own axels. He's got an extensive thread buried somewhere on 125cc Sport bikes.

DRP: Watch You Head!!

Post by toratora » Wed May 10, 2017 11:39 pm

Had some trouble getting the head bearings out. With Ed's help though they came out. At which point we discovered the issue. The center spacer wouldn't move very much to allow purchase on the bearings. We found out why!

Image

Image

Another issue was the security bolt on the key switch on the top triple. Ed made short work of this with his chisel and personal Mjölnir.

Image

And the last thing we got to today was pulling the tires in anticipation of the up coming wheel action.
