Gpr 50 ebs/ebe starter motor

Post by Allyboy » Sat May 19, 2018 11:12 am

Hello, I'm looking for some help. My starter motor is on its last legs. It jams quite often and I need to rock it in a high gear to get it out. Anyway a new starter in the U.K. Is £375 I have found what looks like an identical one on eBay and it says its a starter motor for a hand glider. It has the same scje marking on front and a part number of mg 16651. I would check it against mine but the sticker came off some time ago. Does anyone stil have there sticker on that can check please? Thanks. I can't seem to upload picture of it! But the eBay number is 122815500997. Thanks again

You might be able to take yours apart, and clean it. As for the replacement that you found post a photo of it. The front part that engages the flywheel does come off of these starters, and even if the contacts are messed up you might be able to get it rebuilt.

Yeah that starter does look just like the Derbi starter. The only difference I see is the grounding tab, which the Derbi doesn't employ.

But I would take yours apart, and see if you can service it, since it is working, it's probably just in need of some TLC.

I've had it apart a few times buddy. I even changed brushes. I've Cleaned everything I can see, the starter will work 50% of the time but the other 50% jams at the most awkward of times i.e. When it stalls at busy traffic lights or roundabouts. From research the mg numbers are slightly different but for 90 quid I reckon it maybe worth a gamble!.

Gpr 50 ebs/ebe starter motor: Shipping

Post by toratora » Sat May 19, 2018 5:45 pm

It looks like the same starter, so it's not much of a gamble. It's very likely to work, and the guy will let you return it at the cost of losing the shipping both ways. Since you've already tried to service it I'd say go for the new one. That's a much better price than I've seen them go for from the regular parts places. How did you find it?

I started by googling gpr 50 starter. it eventually came across a video on you tube about repairing a starter from a Ppg engine. which I believe was from a handglider. I then kept googling them and it came up with a picture of the starter from sjce that looked just like mine and is nearly identical. I think the mg part numbers are different. But if push comes to shove I can use the bendix gear( which I believe to be the fault) and still save a fortune. Thanks again

Made it out to the storage today, and found one of these to snap a photo. :)

THere's probably a spec sheet available for these things from the company. Might be worth an email.

From their website there is a PDF catalog of their small engine starters.

So the eBay listing says that they are selling the MG16551, which the catalog lists as an SX, which would be left hand, or counter clockwise turning unit, and the Derbi unit is a MG16150 which is listed as a DX, which is a right hand turning unit. So it looks like you might have to change the polarity of the eBay unit. There's probably an easy way to do this since they sell them in both states.

Wow, thanks for the info. For some reason the pictures you post only come up with the word image?? Anyway I purchased the starter already as I thought it would be alright. I will hopefully get it by Thursday this week. I'm sure the first time I stripped the starter and rebuilt it, it went the opposite direction and it turned out that I had rotated the casing that holds the magnets round a notch by mistake. I reckon if I do that it will spin the way I need it to. Thanks

That's really weird. I've tested it with various browsers too. I wonder if your ISP is blocking, or if imgur has issue with your IP address. Can you try opening the image in a new window, or tab?

Yeah it sounds like you already know how to switch the direction. Please post up photos on how you mod it.
